First performed in 1892, The Nutcracker is based on an 1816 short story by E.T.A. Hoffman. Over the years, it has gained popularity, especially in the USA, with San Francisco Ballet becoming the first company to perform it here in 1944, making it a tradition as treasured as trimming the tree.
